The English Bridge Union runs many events throughout the year, including two overseas congresses – one early in the year, the other in the autumn – in association with First for Bridge. The congress programme varies little year to year, combining two two-day Swiss events (Pairs and Teams) with shorter single-session events. Swiss events are Green-pointed, and the remaining events attract Blue points. Most of the events are stratified, giving more chances for lower-ranked players to win Masterpoints, and prizes are awarded in accordance with the EBU’s normal scale.
For those looking for a partner for the pairs events or teammates for the Pivot and Swiss Teams, the EBU partnership forum offers a quick solution. Results are displayed both on the EBU results page and the First for Bridge Bridgewebs site at bridgewebs.com/first.
While the bridge is important, the included visits of the overseas congresses are a key element of the programme. There are always ample opportunities for relaxation and sightseeing as well.
The emphasis is on providing high-calibre accommodation in a variety of interesting locations, as well as flights from a range of UK airports. Hosted jointly by First for Bridge and the EBU, and run by nationally qualified directors, the overseas congresses emphasise good quality bridge played in congenial surroundings and a friendly atmosphere.
