Your Bridge Programme
Your duplicate bridge will be available every evening between 7:30pm and 10:30pm. We endeavour to vary these evening sessions, balancing between teams and pairs and featuring at least one Swiss event during a two-week break.
Bridge will also be offered some mornings or afternoons. These sessions are normally given over to open pairs/teams.
Masterpoints are awarded on evening bridge sessions, and on day sessions with over 5 tables.
We also try to include interesting bridge seminars as part of your programme, hosted by your EBU-qualified director.
During your holiday, nothing is obligatory, and you can play in as many or as few bridge sessions as you wish. We don’t forget you are on holiday and our bridge programme also allows time to relax, giving you the opportunity to explore the surrounding area.
Make your own way to the Makeney Hall Hotel and meet our bridge team. Join us for a welcome drink with dinner followed by evening bridge.
This morning, our director will provide a seminar, followed by bridge this afternoon.
Enjoy dinner in the hotel this evening and a bridge session.
Today we board the coach for a visit to Chatsworth House. Home to the Dukes of Devonshire for many generations, the land was purchased by Elizabeth and William Cavendish in 1549 for £600. This was the home of Elizabeth, Countess of Shrewsbury, better known as Bess of Hardwick. During her lifetime, she married 4 times and rose to a position of great power and wealth.
In 1547, she married William Cavendish, Treasurer of the King’s Chamber. They had eight children and made Chatsworth their home. A later marriage to George Talbot, 6th Earl of Shrewsbury, in 1567, saw Bess become Countess of Shrewsbury. Over the following generations, the house was transformed into what we see today.
On arrival, we explore this stunning house, which never fails to impress with its wonderful, festive-themed Christmas display. You will be mesmerised as you walk through beautifully decorated rooms, each one a sight to behold.
We return to our hotel this afternoon, with time to relax before our evening meal, followed by bridge.
This morning, we enjoy a bridge session in the hotel.
The afternoon is free for you to enjoy at leisure. You can take a peaceful stroll through the landscaped gardens of Makeney Hall Hotel, admire the views across the Amber Valley, or relax with a cup of tea in the elegant lounges. The bar offers a warm and welcoming spot to unwind, while the restaurant serves classic afternoon teas if you’re in the mood for a treat (at extra cost).
If you’d like to venture a little further, the nearby town of Belper – part of the Derwent Valley Mills UNESCO World Heritage Site – is perfect for a wander among independent shops, riverside walks and heritage landmarks. Or, make your way to the village of Duffield for a quiet drink in one of its inviting pubs or a gentle stroll along the River Derwent.
Dinner at the hotel is included this evening, followed by a bridge session.
After a leisurely breakfast, it is time to check out and depart for home.
