Our first experience working together as bridge host and director was a fantastic introduction to First for Bridge holidays. We had a wonderful week in Croatia, and the fish lunch on board our local boat excursion was particularly memorable due to the vision of our lovely septuagenarian ladies sipping wine from pint pots, as this was the only size of glass available. Needless to say, the bridge was entertaining that evening! Our first bridge holiday was great fun; we met some wonderful people, who have subsequently become regular guests and now friends.
One of our favourite destinations has to be Kaprun in Austria. This wonderful week away combined evening bridge with daytime walks in the mountains, exploring gorges and high-level hydroelectric dams, and walking through the mountain to view glaciers. We returned for a second trip in 2023 and again Kaprun did not disappoint. There is something special about clean mountain air, vivid blue skies, and snow-capped slopes to lift the spirit and hopefully improve the card play.
Another favourite destination of ours is Side in Turkey. Our most memorable experience was visiting a local hammam (Turkish bath), with lots of laughter and sequels as we experienced being foamed, scrubbed and back slapped whilst lying on a communal marble slab. Another highlight of this holiday was the pool-side gala dinner and, on our final night, having a group meal in the lovely a la carte restaurant.
The most elegant destination we have enjoyed hosting in is the 18th-century Château Bela in Slovakia. The château has its own vineyard, and the wine tasting afternoon was very enjoyable. We wandered around the beautiful grounds and relaxed by the outdoor pool, but the most outstanding feature was playing bridge in the opulence of the Orangery.
Our most visited destination is the Athena Royal Beach Hotel in Paphos. In 2024, we will be returning for our third time. We love this hotel for many reasons. The lovely beachfront location is a gentle stroll from the old town and harbour, the staff are all super helpful and friendly, and the variety and quality of food is always a delight. We also enjoy exploring the archaeological park with its incredible Greek and Roman mosaics and buildings.
